When we think of the limousine, we all picture a black or white sleek, stretched car reserved for special events like proms and weddings. But did you know that Limousines were in use long before the advent of the combustible engine? In this blog post, we’ll be focusing on the history of the modern limousine. The modern limousine first made it’s appearance in 1902, almost 120 years ago. It’s a fascinating story, so here’s your quick history lesson:
The first engine-powered limousine was created in the current day city of Limoges, France, formerly in the region of Limousin. You can see where the word “Limousine” comes from (the word Limousin). The first limousines had a driver who sat in the front, outside a covered compartment. This area is said to have resembled the cloak hood worn by the people that lived in the region Limousin.
In 1928, the first stretch limousine was invented. This time it was built on our side of the pond in Arkansas, USA, to transport big band leaders, instruments and orchestras, thus the nickname “big band buses” were given to limos.
A few short years later, in the 1930s, limousines started being used for what they’re mainly used for today: transportation to and from the airport, as well as sightseeing tours. Some time after this, they began to be used for actors and actresses in movies to transport them to their sets, in addition to the film crew and equipment. You can imagine that this started to associate limousines with the rich and famous and why they became seen as a status symbol.
Today, limousines are widely used and are no longer reserved for the wealthy. Over time, society has adopted their use for special occasions, social events, or just a nice treat!
